The History | Colonial Flowers | Russellville, Arkansas
Colonial Flowers was opened in 1938 by Ella Black West. the shop remained in the Black family until being purchased in the 1950’s by J.D. and Ruby Humphrey. At that time the shop was located in one of Russellville’s oldest neighborhoods which was primarily residential. The Humphrey’s then relocated in the early 60’s to Russellville’s Main street downtown where it remains today.

In 1989 upon J.D.s retirement, the shop would continue in the family under the ownership of J.D.s nephew, Bill Shinn. It was at this time David would become store manager. In 2008 David took over the reigns as Bill pursued other interests, and Colonial Flowers then became D.Rachel’s Colonial flowers now celebrating 75 years in the Arkansas River Valley.David joined the staff of Colonial Flowers in 1978 at age 17 while still a senior at Russellville HIgh School. His original hope was to continue on to college pursuing a music degree. However, after a few months David discovered a hidden talent in floral design and for the next 12 years would grow that talent under his mentor, J.D. Humphrey. In 1989 upon J.D.s retirement, the shop would continue in the family under the ownership of J.D.s nephew, Bill Shinn. It was at this time David would become store manager. David has been married to his wife Lorie for 29 years and has one grown son who is a Software Developer and Graphic Designer in Northwest Arkansas. [/person]

Hella has enjoyed a long and prestigious career that began in her home country of Germany where she received her bachelors degree in floral design and then her master’s degree in floral design and agriculture. She then came to America as a single mother along with her only son knowing no english in 1978 to conquer not only the language barrier, but to receive many state and national award from several states. She represented FTD for many years in Mexico City, Phoenix, New York City as well as small venues in the state of Arkansas.[/person]
